About

Emic Ethnographers Private Limited

We are overjoyed to announce that we have embarked upon a new journey in the field of Research. This has come true in the emergence of Research Agency with the help , co-operation and dedication of some of my sincere colleagues, friends and students, who are basically specialized in Research Methodology. This Agency will cater to the needs of the Government and Non-Government Organizations who are working in varying social settings to help and uplift the life of underprivileged.

The Government invariably comes up with so many planned programmes spending millions in financing the program and incorporating it, but somehow the results do not come as per as the expectations. It is extremely necessary that before a change is introduced, the cultural attributes should be understood at the very basic level and participation of community is extremely necessary so that they overcome any hesitation in accepting it. It is here the role of Anthropologists becomes important.

Anthropologists are highly specialized in Ethnographic Research Methods. They are the best field researchers. They establish rapport, take in – depth interviews; use  non participant and participant observation in their methodology, arrange FGDs and Case Studies, Surveys and thereby collect rich data which gives a holistic idea about the cultural settings and with this knowledge in the background if Policies and Programmes are launched there would be no chance of failure . Hence, a lot of time and money can be saved and success rate would be really high.

Anthropologists emic view or perspective is extremely important to craft and manage projects in culturally acceptable ways and bring noticeable changes, otherwise we start interpreting others through our own cultural beliefs.

This agency is committed to in-depth field work and rich data collection . We work for 8 hours per day which will include the travel time to the field .

The field investigators are given adequate training as per the requirements of the field work .

  • The gravitas and experience of field investigators are taken care of , and they are checked time to time by our Research Associate (highly specialized and experienced) in the field work methods, ensuring their active involvement during the field work.
  • After every field day, at least half an hour is given to find out if there were any hurdles or any investigator needs to clear his / her doubts.
  • The data is checked soon after collection each day , to avoid any gaps.
  • The team is committed and dedicated to provide authentic in-depth data.

Dr. Shashi Bhatia completed her master’s degree in Anthropology from the Department of Anthropology, University of Lucknow in 1995.

Started teaching in the same department from 1999 and continued or more than twenty years.  A passionate teacher and Researcher she taught both undergraduate and post graduate students. She taught Research Methodology as one of the Mandatory paper to students pursuing Master’s degree and supervised their dissertation based on Anthropological fieldwork. She also accompanied students as one of the supervisors to tribal areas, having studied the life and culture of Car Nicobarese belonging to Car Nicobar Island, Gaddis of Himachal Pradesh at Manali, Garasias of Mount Abu. She also guided the thesis of M.Phil. students on social and health problems. Currently, she is the part time Academic counselor for the “MAAN” programe of IGNOU University. She is also the mentor of five Master’s degree students completing their fieldwork and thesis under her able guidance.

Besides teaching, she has attended various conferences, seminars and workshops and presented Research papers in reputed journals several Indian Universities. Also delivered special lectures on topics related to health and nutrition. Co-authored a book “Car Nicobar: A Medico Anthropological study” on the Traditional Medicinal System of Car Nicobarese.

In April 2019, she got an offer from the University of Manitoba to join the project. She was the Senior Ethnographers Consultant and Supervisor of the project related to Maternal and New born care. This assignment was completed in October 2020. Soon after COVID-19 gave a break, and changed the life of many. Most of us became unemployed and many things changed or better.

Dr. Shashi Bhatia made up her mind to unite a small team of researchers and work together. These efforts over two years’ time took the shape of an Agency and finally our Agency “Emic Ethnographers PVT. LTD.” was formed with the aim to give quality work in Maternal Health and other areas of interest.

My aim is to take work from big Organizations and give work to highly qualified people having expertise in the field, not having highly paid good jobs. This effort will give good quality work to the Government organization and NGO’s planning interventions for the welfare of the community, as well as jobs to the others who are interested.
